Crosswalk Safety Awareness Day, October 13, 2010

Only a few days after Olivia’s Memorial service in 2009, Naomi (Olivia’s sister) and Jane put on some bright orange vests, picked up large yellow signs and joined hundreds of other volunteers at Crosswalk Safety Awareness Day. Standing on a busy corner next to the University of Arkansas, we held our signs high and tried to make a difference.
This year “Team Olivia” consisted of over 40 faithful friends. Perched outside of Olivia’s school, Leverett Elementary, we were joined by her fifth grade classmates and best friends. For the next ten hours, we waved, smiled and reminded everyone about Olivia and to be aware. Team Olivia was a special part of over 300 volunteers spread throughout Fayetteville.
It was a beautiful sunny day. We knew Olivia would have loved to be there holding her own sign. She would have held it high over her head with a huge smile on her freckled face.
We miss you Olivia. Thank you for your example. And thank you to our friends who believe that making a statement can also make a difference.
